4 Reasons Your AC May Be Blowing Hot Air

Obviously, if your air conditioner is blowing out hot air, you will want to know why so that you can fix it. This means that your home is not being cooled and is probably working too hard, which means your electricity bills are going to be higher. To avoid these situations, you should know these four reasons why your AC may be blowing out hot air so that you check and correct it:

  1. There Is a Refrigerant Leak:  A refrigerant leak is actually a common problem and leads to warm air being blown by the AC unit because the refrigerant is not there to convert the air into cold air. You can easily spot a refrigerant leak if you notice a pool of water around the condenser unit. If you notice this, it's important to call an HVAC specialist since handling refrigerant can be harmful. You're much better off letting a professional repair the leak for you and refill the refrigerant levels in your AC unit.
  2. Coils Are Frozen: If the coils inside of the unit become frozen, they won't work to move the air through the unit, which leads to warm air being blown out. This is another common problem since condensation easily builds up inside of the condenser, which can then freeze on the coils. To fix this, you will want to try turning off the AC for a couple of hours and then turn it back on again. This allows the ice inside of the condenser to unfreeze enough so that the unit will start working properly again.
  3. Unit Needs to Be Reset: Sometimes, the air conditioning unit can trip, which is common when it is being overworked in the summer. All it needs is to be reset, which can easily be done by unplugging and replugging the unit. If the unit still isn't blowing cold air, then the problem definitely lies elsewhere.
  4. The Compressor Overheats: The compressor can easily overheat at some point, which happens due to age. This means that the compressor will need to be replaced. It's best to have a professional come out to inspect if this is indeed the reason your air conditioning unit is not blowing cold air. At this point, they can replace the compressor for you fairly quickly so that you can have cool air circulating in your home once again.
